Archaeological Walks
The Wiltshire Council archaeology team are hosting three guided walks in July. These events are part of the Council for British Archaeology’s Festival of British Archaeology and are free of charge.
Guided Walk around the Easton Grey Roman Small Town on the Fosse Way
Sunday 13 July
Join staff from the Wiltshire Council Archaeology Service on a guided walk (approx. 1-2 miles) on the site of the Roman Small Town. We will be looking at various archaeological features visible in the landscape around The Fosse Way where it crosses the river Avon, near Malmesbury.
We will be meeting at the parking area on The Fosse Way Byway off the A4040 (Malmesbury to Sherston road) next to the Tracklements Fruit Factory at SN16 0RD, 3km west of Malmesbury. The turning for the Fosse Way is on the left just after the entrance to the Whatley Manor Hotel. We will start the walk at 2pm. There is only a small parking area, so car sharing is advisable, and parking cannot be guaranteed. If you are happy to allow us to pass on your contact details to others who would like to car share, please let us know. You may be able to find alternative parking areas in Easton Grey Village (just under 1km away).
The walk is mainly over gravel tracks, with some steep climbs and will last approximately 1-2 hours. Please wear suitable footwear and dress appropriately for the weather. Please also be aware that there are no refreshment or toilet facilities at this location.
Booking is essential as places are limited.
Guided Walk around the Stonehenge Landscape
Sunday 20 July

Entrance to Stonehenge is not included but you may wish to visit Stonehenge and the new Visitor Centre beforehand, where you can see impressive reconstructions of Neolithic Houses (see English heritage website for more details). The meeting point is approximately a 20 minute walk from Stonehenge along byway 12. The walk will start at 2:00pm.
The walk is over a relatively gentle terrain on grazed grassland and gravel tracks and will last approximately 2 hours. This is an exposed open landscape so please wear suitable footwear and dress appropriately for the weather. Please also be aware that there are no refreshment or toilet facilities during the walk.
Booking is essential as places are limited.
